TastyTales wishes all it’s dear food lovers a very happy and Tasty onam.
When I think of Onam there are a few images that come to my mind, the image of the colourful Pookkalam which makes our homes and minds vibrantly pleasant, the happy and energetic Onakkali, the wild and suspense filled Pulikkali where the wild comes in close quarters with the humans etc. But as a food lover myself the utmost image that comes to my mind is that of Onasadya, a veritable spread of dishes from Kerala, which if our imagination is boosted a little more, gives the visual of another pookkalam on the lush green background of a banana leaf. WOW Tasty…
One of my favourite side dish among the many in Onasadya is Pachadi eaten fresh and typically made of finely chopped, boiled and mashed vegetables or even seasonal fruits with ground coconut and mustard seeds with sugar or sarkkara. Some green chillies also can be added according to taste, to make the dish a little sweet and spicy. TastyTales is today going to mak a pineapple Pachadi to enhance the Tasty experience of Onam.
I do not claim that the recipe I make, to be 100%authentic and traditional… May be my own family’s cooking influence, may be my own experiences and experiments with cooking and above all the happiness I get when the Taste tickles my Tastebuds must have peppered in them.
Pineapple Pachadi
- Ripe pineapple sliced _ 1big cup
- Ripe Black grapes _ 1/4 small cup
- Green chillies _. 4 to 5 Nos
- Coconut grated _ 1small cup
- Mustard seeds _. 1table spoon
- Sour, thick curd _ 1small cup
- Sugar or sarkkara _. 1/2 small cup
- Turmeric powder _. 1/2 teaspoon
Cook the pineapple pieces with the turmeric powder and salt. Once the pieces become soft, mash it to a smooth pulp. Keep it aside. Now grind the coconut, mustard seeds and green chillies to a smooth paste. Heat a pan and put 3 to 4 teaspoons of coconut oil. Put some mustard seeds. Once the seeds crackle, put 2 to 3 dry red chillies and 6 to 7 curry leaves. Put the mashed pineapple pulp in to it. Add the sugar or sarkkara. Add the coconut paste. Stir the mixture till it is sort of caramelised and thick. Now add the thick curd and stir again. Stir it till the mixture thickens again. Add little salt if needed. Now the last tip.. A TastyTales tip….. Switch off the stove and put the ripened grapes in to the mixture and mix it. Now the TastyTales pineapple Pachadi is ready.
